Church of the City Downtown Nashville meets at Rocketown and even though a church and it’s venue can differ radically, this church was as cool as it’s venue.

The church is easy to find as Rocketown is a staple in downtown Nashville. The parking was fairly straight forward as Rocketown has an on-site parking lot. Once you park, there are signs leading one to the inside of the venue.

As I walked inside, I was remarkably relieved by the atmosphere of the church. No one greeted me, no one ran up to shake my hand or try to hug me. Although I didn’t dress ‘emo’ it was nice to be left alone, able to seat myself, and enjoy the presence of the Lord while church was being setup and the staff / volunteers were running around. The room used for the sanctuary would fill quickly however none of the attendees of the church greeted me, shook my hand, introduced themselves, or tried to use me as a ‘tickle me Elmo’. It was such a relief as the worship set started at this non-denomnational church in Nashville.

The worship set was fairly well executed. There were lyrics on the center and side screens. The team seemed well prepared. The only real challenge was probably line-of-sight to the front given the packed room. But this was a small issue and probably one not readily remedied.  By the time the message started it was negliable when everyone was seated.

The message was fairly standard fare however what followed wasn’t. After the message was delivered, the congregation was instructed to break off into groups of 3 people and given discussion points. This is about the point where I would exit however the questions were general and what amazed / impressed me was that boundaries were set from the stage – that this wasn’t at time of probing deep confession – just general discussion. As a first time visitor this was both a relief and demonstrated a strong understanding of what a Sunday morning share should be. After the small discussion time, there service headed to a conclusion.

As the service concluded with a final song, I headed out the door as there was another service starting and one likes to open up parking as soon as possible. I’ve been the 11am person waiting for the 9am people to leave at other churches. I was amazed at how cool and well executed Church of the City Downtown Nashville was. It’s worth a visit to Church of the City Nashville Downtown, a non-denomnational church in Nashville.
