The Family Business

So my parents owned funeral homes. They owned the Meyers Funeral Home, which became Myers Hall funeral home after my father, my grandfather was Myers. Now then it became Myers harder and then Myers Baker still bears my grandfather’s name to this day. In fact, they bury my mom for free and you burn my sister’s substantial discount.

So I always grew up around dead people and then to compound it. We bought another funeral home called pit and turf in New York springs, Pennsylvania. So we were making runs between them. My mom owned one my dad on the other due to some, I think some monopoly rules so to speak. The one of them couldn’t own two different chains. So are two different ones. My mom on one my dad on the other one. So I recall, but he always enjoyed involving people and then I would always see the finish work.

And I saw a lot of it so I became desensitized to dead people. I remember my grandparents lived above the funeral home so when there was a viewing what they recall viewing back then, often the night before a funeral back in like the 80s You had to be quiet. I’d be quiet upstairs at my grandma’s house. Because my grandfather owned the business, that’s just kind of the way it work. So you had to be quiet.

And then when there were funerals, who really had to be quiet, those that was done, we really had to but yeah, I saw dead people all the time. And I remember when 911 happened. I lived in New York City and I recognize the smell of death. I mean, it’s the first time I had smelled it outside the funeral home. So I understood and I don’t know I’d written around a hearse before I remember being at comic book conventions or self defense or whatever and the beeper, the pocket pager would go off and my father was the second person after the coroner to be notified of a death and we had to go, he was on call 24/7.

Sometimes he had to leave the house in the middle of the night. That was just that was the life we had
