Mariah Carey — Early Columbia Promotional Material

These three items form a small group of early Columbia promotional releases from the beginning of Mariah Carey’s recording career. They are not simply duplicate retail copies of the debut album; each served a different promotional purpose and carries its own catalog number and presentation.

Collector Notes

Taken together, these pieces are especially interesting because they document the promotional campaign surrounding Mariah Carey at the very beginning of her Columbia career in 1990. Rather than representing three copies of the same release, they show three different parts of the label’s promotional strategy: a promotional version of the complete album, a dedicated promotional issue for Vision of Love, and a separate artist-profile disc.

The repeated use of phrases such as “Demonstration Not For Sale” is significant. These releases were intended for industry, radio, press, retail promotion, or other professional use, rather than ordinary commercial sale. As a result, their catalog numbers and packaging should be preserved in the collection record rather than cataloging them simply as duplicates of the debut album.

Collection significance: This group can reasonably be viewed as a small 1990 Columbia-era Mariah Carey promotional archive. Its interest comes less from having multiple copies of one title and more from having several distinct pieces representing the launch of the same artist at essentially the same moment in her career.

Cataloging note: Keep each item as a separate entry. The catalog numbers 45202, CSK 73348, and CSK 3087 are important identifying information and distinguish these promotional releases from ordinary retail editions.
