Vision (and Mission) Statement

When my parents first divorced I had a friend named David Mavretic. We called him “Mav”. He came over to my home once to teach me how to get thru a school dance but he also told me that my mission was to “boldly go where you haven’t gone before…”

Boldly go where you haven’t gone before…

In the coming years I’d move to New York City to chase a dream, spend time in Los Angeles to learn how to make the world a better place, dash off to Africa to work with orphans, help make films globally, and do animal rescue and community outreach in Nashville. It was always about going boldly.

…and yet while it’s considered a powerful life motto, it’s mostly a vision statement.

vision describes the future you aspire to create or the ultimate direction you want to move toward.

“To boldly go where you haven’t gone before” is:

  • aspirational
  • future-focused
  • expansive and directional
  • about possibility and exploration

It doesn’t explain how  you’ll act day-to-day — it describes the kind of life or future you’re aiming for – and it’s the lives I’ve lived for so very long.

My mission statement defines my current purpose, daily life, and goals (what you do), while a vision statement outlines the desired future state and long-term aspirations (what you aim to become).

“Helping one life at a time by creating safe places, sharing hope, and serving those in need.” serves as my mission statement, how I have tried to live out my vision statement.

I can only wonder if anyone thought this was what was in store for me as I was placed in a box and sent here…
