The Love of the Story and Writing

So as a kid, one of the television shows I watched with my parents was the new The Twilight Zone. It was the 1980s incarnation of the Rod Serling classic television series. I remember watching that on CBS with my parents. The opener had Bruce Willis in it, which was great. And then you know, years later I watched it in syndication.

One of the stories I really liked was one called her pilgrim soul. And it was written by an author named Alan Brennert and I remember I knew that her pilgrim soul was based on a book or had been novelized or something to that effect. So I remember in the 1990’s just really wishing that could find a copy of this book. And that’s I was training, the special by bolts of Media Play where I worked. Lo and behold, there was and years later, through the power of social media, I was actually able to connect with the author Alan Brenner. And just being able to connect with him periodically. is amazing to me.

Writing is something that I enjoy doing. All throughout my university education, I had to write papers and I actually enjoyed writing them and going through the writing process of an outline, and that draft and revision and more drafts and more revisions until I really came up with these papers that I’ve been proud of. I post a lot of them on the internet. But I got a lot of comments even when I didn’t quite meet the rubric. I was told by many instructors that my writing was pretty good.

And there’s a lot of times you know, when I was able to write papers that I had creative license to do what I wanted to do, and there were a lot of papers where I was simply writing to the rubric. I was just looking at what they were looking for putting the information in there, but doing it in a way in a style that I was satisfied with at the end of the day. That was more my second time around. School than my first my adult returning student years, but Allen has always been an inspiration because his writing is just so amazing to me.

Is that twist obviously the Twilight Zone adaption played heavily on the twist but he had written quite a number of stories in her pilgrim soul and other stories and all of them were outstanding to me. So I feel very fortunate to be able to connect with one of my favorite fiction authors, if I had to name my favorite fiction books, it would definitely be her pilgrim soul that compilation of stories by Alan Brenner as well as The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster my mother was studying children’s literature at one point, and she had to read that book, which meant we read that book.

Now I also got from the library on cassettes at the time, I think, Pat Carroll reading an abridged version of that book. I eventually got an LP on Ebay. I remember going late at night to studio in New York City towards China town that was willing to record it onto a CD for me. Obviously, you can do that at home now, but they were willing to record it, do some filtering some stuff that you can’t do at home. And that was great. And I actually ended up giving my mom a copy of that CD.

Fam Tollbooth, it’s just an amazing story. And I remember giving that to my foster kids as well as my own daughter too. So books have definitely played in important role in my life. And for me, as a writer,
